Bunko Privacy

Bunko is an Android app from Bells & Pixels for reading, searching and editing your own markdown documents. This policy explains what Bunko does and does not do with your data. The short version: Bunko has no server of its own, collects no personal information, and sends nothing about you to Bells & Pixels.

What we collect

Nothing. Bells & Pixels operates no backend for Bunko and receives no data from the app. There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking of any kind.

Where your content lives

Your documents and notes are stored on your device. Depending on the sources you choose to add:

  • A local folder: Bunko reads the markdown files in a folder you pick. The files stay where they are on your device.

  • A GitHub repository: if you connect GitHub, Bunko reads and writes files in your own repository, communicating directly with GitHub's servers as you, over an encrypted connection. Your use of GitHub is governed by GitHub's own privacy policy. Bells & Pixels is not an intermediary and does not receive this traffic.

  • Notes written in the app: these are saved as ordinary markdown files on your device. If you have Android's backup enabled, they may be included in your own device backup, which is controlled by you and your Google account, not by Bells & Pixels.

The GitHub access token

If you connect GitHub, the access token that authorises Bunko to act as you is stored only on your device, encrypted using an Android Keystore key, and is excluded from Android's automatic backup. It is never transmitted to Bells & Pixels. It is used only to make requests to GitHub on your behalf, and you can revoke it at any time from your GitHub account settings.

Permissions

  • Internet access is used only to sync with a GitHub repository you have connected. With no GitHub source added, Bunko does not use the network.

  • Notifications are used only to tell you, on your own device, when a background sync has found new or changed documents. There is no push service and no message is sent from or to any server of ours.

Deleting your data

Uninstalling Bunko removes all of the app's local data from your device. Before uninstalling, you can export your in-app notes as real markdown files from the app's Settings. Because we hold no data about you, there is nothing on our side to delete.

Children

Bunko is a productivity tool intended for a general adult audience and is not directed at children.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new "last updated" date.
